Olive with her lucky ring



~ Olive always wore a pink and green pansy ring. The ring was made out of her father's pin and it was her good luck charm.


~ The notorious murderer Lizzie Borden was one of Olive's distant relatives


~ In 1944 Olive was given an Army citation for bravery when she helped turn over an enemy ammunition truck.
~ Three Bad Men was Olive's favorite film. She liked dramatic movies better than comedies.


~ Olive made her New York stage debut on December 20, 1930. She had the lead role in a play called "The Devil Is A Lady".


~ When Olive was cast in the 1925 film The Dressmaker In Paris she only owned one dress.




Playing the piano



~ Olive could speak French and she knew how to play the piano.


~ When Olive was a child she attended Sacred Heart Catholic grade school in Norfolk,
Virginia. She was one of the first students to attend the school when it opened in 1920.


~ She was 5 feet 4 inches tall, had brown eyes, and normally weighed 105 pounds. In
her final years Olive gained 30 pounds due to her alcoholism and other illnesses.


~ Columnist Jimmie Fiddler was Olive's first press agent. He said she was "unforgettable for the perfect beauty of her figure".


~ Olive had a Swedish maid named Margaret Johnson.


~ In July 1927 Olive bought a custom built Lincoln car with a convertible top. It was the only one of it's kind on the West coast.


~ Olive took voice lessons from Mrs. Paul Sloane to prepare for talking
pictures. Her first talkie was the 1929 drama Half Marriage.




In The Joy Girl



~ She was called "the joy girl of the silver screen". Olive got this nickname after starring in the popular 1927 film The Joy Girl.


~ Olive collected dolls from all over the world.


~ Before she became a star Olive worked as a telephone operator.


~ In 1925 Olive was named one of the 13 WAMPAS (Western Association Of Motion Picture
Advertisers) Baby Stars. The other baby stars included June Marlowe and Betty Arlen.


~ Olive did not know how to swim. She used a stunt double for her swimming scenes in the 1934 film
Chloe, Love Is Calling.


~ One of Olive's hobbies was playing golf.


~ She wore a size 2 shoe. Olive's feet were so small she had to have special shoes made.

~ When Olive died she was broke. The only possessions she had were a scrapbook of
clippings and a photo of herself that was signed "Sincerely yours, Olive Borden".


~ In August 1926 Olive underwent an emergency appendectomy in San Francisco. She returned to work five weeks later.


~ Olive was close friends with Anita Stewart, June Clyde, and Cornelius Keefe.


~ Actress
Natalie Joyce was Olive's cousin. She and Natalie worked together in the 1929 melodrama Dance Hall.
~ Steamboat Willie, the first Mickey Mouse cartoon, was shown with Olive's 1928 film Gang War.


~ Olive's friends called her "Ollie".


~ She owned fourteen fur coats in 1927. When Olive started having financial problems she had to sell all of them.
